Name of Course: Introduction to SME Development Financing Course for Practicing Professionals in both Public and Private Institutions
Length of Course: Three full days
Participants: The course targets project or program managers who have responsibility for investing, managing or analyzing development finance transactions that target small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The course is designed for professionals, entrepreneurs and business owners who are actively engaged in designing, introducing and managing implementation of finance for SMEs within their respective organizations. The course will be relevant for individuals and teams from the public sector, private sector, non-governmental organizations as well as owners/managers of SMEs that are seeking to better understand the role and impact of development finance on this important segment of the market.
Entry Requirements: Participants must hold a minimum of a diploma in social or applied science disciplines.
Training Objectives: The primary objective of this course is to provide participants with the theoretical background and analytical tools necessary for sound financial decision-making, particularly in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The course will also emphasize financial decision-making from the perspective of institutions such as development and commercial banks, private equity funds, DFIs, and other state-owned entities (SOEs) providing capital to smaller, innovative, growing and startup firms.
At the end of the training course, candidates will be able to:
- Distinguish enterprise development funding from corporate finance/private equity transactions and apply appropriate analytical tools;
- Analyze project viability;
- Design appropriate development financing transactions for SMEs;
- Structure the potential investment projects;
- Develop viable exit strategies for SME Financing;
- Perform a detailed discounted cash flow analysis of a project;
- Financially model a simple investment proposal utilizing Microsoft Excel;
- Distinguish the pros and cons of various project evaluation models;
- Identify and analyze issues major regulatory and macroeconomic issues for host governments funding SME development programes; and
- Develop innovative strategies for effective SME funding and management of investment risk.
