Course Overview |
The challenge of economic development has come to focus more and more on the role of finance – both its failures in the recent past and its prospects for the future. Whilst international capital markets and global financial institutions have played a key role in this development, increasingly, developments in these markets have raised concerns about the effectiveness of these institutions. As a result of several financial crisis, finance-related issues have come to the fore in academic discourse. This course provides an integrated analysis of issues in international finance for development. The focus of the course will be on the characteristics of international financial markets, institutions, instruments, as well as their use by governments and corporations. This course provides students with a systematic understanding of economic and financial approaches to development and in particular, the role of finance and financial institutions.
